Created originally in the UK The Award Program was first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1956 as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award as a means to encourage and motivate young people over the age of 14 years to become involved in a balanced program of voluntary self-development activities.
"To assist young people, aged between 14 and 25, affected by chronic illness, to reach their full potential in life and to encourage personal growth, enterprise and a broad range of life skills, as well as a sense of social awareness and responsibility to the wider community."
The Dukes Award have 3 levels being Bronze, Silver and Gold and incorporate requirements of Community service, Skill, Physical Recreation, Adventurous Journeys, and Residential Projects.
The Dukes Award encourages core values of self esteem, positive self talk, formative personal development, and the development of community pursuits (fundraising).
Perhaps the best part of this program is that the individual goes at their own pace but is encouraged by their purple Soup Dukes coordinator, to complete the award in as little as six months.
The program installs a non competitive environment enforcing equality and safety.
DOE gives thought to the need for all programs to be available to all even for those with physical limitations. Through Purple Soup the Dukes award is available to those with mobility issues, medical conditions and other challenges.
The time frame helps establish self motivation where as the time given becomes voluntary.
The award is flexible to the participants already established timetable still allowing time with their families and thus giving a better understanding of prioritisation.
The balanced program allows for the participant to build on their existing abilities and to extend in to their stretch zone. This allows skills to be developed for use beyond the program, extending into adulthood and their private and professional lives.
Achievement focused, this develops leadership skills that are transferable into the young persons life.
